I have been working at US Marine Corps full-time (more than 10 years)

Pros

Discipline, knowledge and ability to make a contribution that makes a difference. Opportunity for growth and progressive leadership positions. Offers true challenges that help you understand who you really are and what you're capable of.

Cons

As a small service, we do more with less. That often means less time to lead and mentor. Everyone has a job and multiple collateral duties. Juggling all these duties, trying to maintain proficiency, it's hard to keep all the balls in the air. The first one to fall is often the people.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take time to observe subordinates. Take notes, keep records, know your Marines. Don't rely on your subordinate's self evaluation to make up for your lack of leadership.

I worked at US Marine Corps full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Some of the best reasons to work here are unparallelled amounts of experience that you can't get anywhere else. Most of the experience you will pick up here is unique in the sense that most civilians will not be able to compare. You learn to structure your life and hold yourself to higher standards.

    Cons

Like most jobs, there will be bad days; however, in the marine corps most of the leadership believe in mass punishment. In the sense that if someone in your platoon or unit gets in some kind of trouble then everyone else in that group also gets punished. I really disliked this aspect of the marine corps. I always thought that if i did what i was supposed to do and never got into any trouble that i should be left alone but that wasn't always the case. There were many occasions where i found myself having liberty taken away because some dirtbag decided to not follow the rules.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Learn your occupation well, stay out of trouble, keep your marines in line. Take every opportunity you can take to advance yourself in the ares of education, work qualifications, and keep a very detailed account of all your achievements. I recommend keeping a binder of all your achievements and have your higher ups write up letters to back up all the things that you accomplished your unit so that you can have something to show when you decide to leave the marines.
