Pros

There are many opportunities for young people who are uncertain of what they want to be when they "grow up". Joining the Navy gives the ability to learn who they will be and what they are a capable of without being secluded in the comfort of home. The skills one learns through seasoned mentorship while in sometimes stressful situations cannot be bought through a college education, nor can it learned without stretching the limits away from home.
-Great way to learn how to work in a diverse environment
-Great way to learn a trade
-Great way to see what the world has to offer
-Great way to serve for those who feel they have something to offer others
.....All this and you can retire when your 38 if you join right out of High School.

Cons

Though the Pros by far out weigh the Cons, there is a saying known well in the Navy..."Choose your rate, choose your fate". This means that certain professions have better opportunities for advancement dependent on the current staffing levels at any given time. So for those looking to start a new career, just know to research the position and make sure that it is a good fit. But be mindful, promotion opportunities are not necessarily a concern for a person just looking to start a great career, because the Navy IS a great career for those who can follow instruction and are willing to work hard.

I have been working at US Navy full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Adventure, teamwork, camaraderie and a chance to be a part of something bigger than yourself. Job security, benefits, healthcare, and performance based promotions. Plenty of skills that transition well to civilian employment.

    Cons

Limited opportunities to choose where you will live. You will most likely move every three years. There will be extended times when you will be separated from your family.

    Advice to Management

Senior Navy Leadership needs to stop their wasteful spending practices, particularly in the shore installation management sector.
