Former Employee - Machinist Mate in Norfolk, VA

I worked at US Navy full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

There are no OJT programs out there that match what working in the US Navy has to offer. Particularly the USMAP program for apprenticeship programs.

    Cons

Shrinking opportunity for advancement in select rates, long working hours and a pay scale that is based more on tenure than performance.

Current Employee - Naval Officer in Washington, DC

I have been working at US Navy full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

I like the travel opportunities as well as the challenge of dealing with multiple problems. I also like meeting new people and changing jobs oftenn.

    Cons

The travel can be viewed negatively when it's counted as time away from home. Also, dealing with problems in a shrinking budget environment can become frutrating at times.
