Former Employee - Commander (O-5) in Honolulu, HI
Former Employee - Commander (O-5) in Honolulu, HI

I worked at US Navy full-time (more than 10 years)

Pros

Service to country, mostly safe environments (won't get shot at), great benefits like free medical / dental.

Cons

"Surface warfare officers eat their young"...sink or swim environment, tough to find a mentor, and very thin pyramid organizational structure meaning the top jobs (Commanding Officers of ships and shore stations) are few and far between. One bad fitness report can derail a career.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Eliminate zero defect mentality.
