I have been working at US Navy full-time for more than 10 years

Pros

Great pay and benefits. You are paid while getting training and the training is with cutting edge technology. No two days are the same and is very challenging. The opportunity to see different cultures and get paid to do so as a representative of the United States.

Cons

Some of the underway time can get boring as well as missing major life events. Very lonely to be underway for the holidays. But after 30 years I will miss the kind-ship and great friendships that are made.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

I have been working at US Navy full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Travel. Stability and certainty in salary. Support networks. Ability to live and work abroad.

    Cons

Deployments can be lengthy, keeping you separated from family.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus on the essentials. Know priorities. Communicate to your people the mission, where your unit fits so no ambiguity exists on what are their roles and responsibilities. Emphasize the imperatives for Commander's Intent, and follow through by empowering and trusting your people to do the right thing. Resist the urge to expect the zero defect mentality...even some of our greatest Naval leaders scraped the bottom of their ships on a reef. Take care of your sailors, always.

I have been working at US Navy full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

    Good benefits.
    Good chance to promote quickly.
You can see lots of cool places.
Lots of potential to do lots of different jobs.

    Cons

    You start at the bottom.
Different people are held to different standards.
You can be the best but expect to do things you don't want to do.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Work with the people that matter the most. The ones that promote and the ones that work the hardest from commands around the world. Quit trusting the master chiefs that have been around forever in telling you how the rest of feel.
