I worked at US Patent and Trademark Office full-time for more than 3 years

Pros

The pros are the full-time telework and the enhanced GS pay scale. You can live anywhere and not have to report to work.

Cons

When you are junior your work is reviewed. If the person reviewing your work doesn't know what they are doing, you are in trouble. They will constantly return your work and tell you to redo it for ridiculous reasons and you won't be able to make the quota and you will either work 100 hours a week or get fired.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be more selective on who you hire into management.

Working at the USPTO is both challenging and relaxing. An excellent balance.

I have been working at US Patent and Trademark Office

    Pros

Pay is not bad, could be better.
Learn the state of the art every single day.
Working hard and meticulously results in massive boosts in confidence and energy levels.
What a thrill it is to be able to articulate prior art findings that meet the most subtle aspects of inventions and fend off counter-arguments with passion, sometimes before a judge.
Learn to view things from a million different vantage points.
All the benefits of a federal job with job security and super flexible schedules (you can work from home full time).

    Cons

It can be solitary confinement if you dont initiate networking for yourself within the office.

Some managers love to abuse their powers. Usually its the ones who lack confidence, work ethics and ability to do quality work. Very easy to tell who falls in this category.

Silly production and count system but it is possible to take advantage of it (and make tons of extra money).

Ridiculous/weak arguments from attorneys make the job less challenging.

WAY too much money spent on contractors...$500 to move computer equipment??!!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop throwing money at contractors. Instead, reduce fees so small inventors can afford filing and other fees.

Cut out 50% of managers who do squat or monkey-work. Make the remaining examine new cases so that the backlog can go down.

    Overhaul the arcane PSA/FSA program.

Stop modifying rules every freaking day!!!!

    Pros

if you can manage your time then this job is fantstic. everything is on you though and there is a lot of accountability but that's generally a good thing. salary is great, bonuses a plenty as well as OT

    Cons

too many new initiatives at the same time, COPA, CPC, AIA too many acronyms! higher ups are not really sure what they want

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    less concurrent initiatives
