Former Employee - Patent Examiner in Alexandria, VA

    Pros

    -Job security
    - good pay
    -extremely flexible work schedule
    - if you work hard you can advance your career

    Cons

    - a heavy work load
    - deadlines are hard to meet
    - job gets repetitive
    - experience only counts in that particular industry (patent law)
    - some managers micro manage too much

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Fortunately, I had a great supervisor who assisted me with my work. He was very patient and always helpful. Some of my colleagues used to complain about how their supervisors were short tempered and would "always be on their cases" so to speak. For this job you need to give your employees a lot of room to work. If you micro manage it can be very annoying and counterproductive.
