Pros

Work with some very smart people, friendly, talkative, dedicated to doing a good job. Insightful. Decent office work environment, cafeteria/post office/barber/bank in the building. Very large gym a 2 min walk from building, with reasonable opportunities to exercise during the day. Occasionally excellent opportunity to influence acquisition programs and national defense.

Cons

Lots of "everyone knows that's how you do it", bureaucracy and roadblocks. Discouraging insight into how the government as a whole blows money, without any clear way to stop it most of the time. Lots of vague projects with very specific, changing, odd requirements for upper management.

Advice to Management

Overall great place to work, but no one seems to know that the process is broken, the scope unwieldy because it would imply weakness I suppose. There are so many layers that one hand doesn't clearly know what the 486 other hands are doing across government, and the answer always seems to be "more and more stable funding." That's not the answer. A massive culture change needs to occur to be more influential in gov't, instead of simply playing the same losing game. Keep up the great work environment though, because I think there are a lot of brilliant people who have enough...resilience...to make positive change even in a challenging environment.

    Pros

Ability to work with the different services in a Joint environment. Outstanding opportunities within the nuclear enterprise. Omaha was a great location. USSTRATCOM will be constructing their new HQs building soon.

    Cons

Due to the nature and classification of some of the jobs, you tend to work behind closed doors and only see the different directorates if you make the effort or have to interact with them. Many of the directorates are located below ground with no windows. Not good location if you do not like winter.

  2. Great place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live here.

    Pros

Great folks; STRATCOM boasts a large retired military community with widely varied experiences. Not a day goes by when you don't learn something.

    Cons

Frequent turnover at the 2/3/4-Star level. Rapid changes in plans, policy and administrative details. 4-stars come here to die...and want to leave their legacy.

    Advice to Management

    "it 'aint broken."
