Pros

Good co-workers, my dept had good team environment, autonomy, nice work/life balance, it was great to work on a well known brand

Cons

Declining industry, tough economy for newspapers, strategy kept changing, very numbers driven, work/team experience varies widely depending on what dept. you work in.

Advice to Management

Value your dedicated employees.

  2. A valuable learning experience that convinced me that that now is the wrong time to work for a traditional media company

    Pros

Great people to interact with. Fun and lively coworkers who are passionate about sports. Very flexible work environment in terms of dress code and schedules. There are TV's around the office with sports on TV so you're constantly immersed. Lots of knowledgeable people to learn from.

    Cons

Newspaper company in a digital era. High-inertia and painstaking bureaucracy. Compensation is pathetic given comps across the industry. The hiring processes are very incestuous and you'll find that almost everyone is in their job because they previously worked with someone at ESPN or Yahoo. Makes for some issues regarding complacency.

    Advice to Management

Take care of your best employees and plan for 5-10 years out, not just next quarter.
