I have been working at UT Health Science Center San Antonio full-time (More than 5 years)

Pros

Every professor I met was eager to give great career advice. Easy to communicate with your superiors. Parking and gym are great.

Cons

Some research facilities could use more upgrades, and the food service/cafeterias are terrible. Bring your own lunch.

    Pros

The institution puts its employees first. It tends to pay very generously for new faculty-to-be, provides numerous avenues to assist development (academic/career/personal counseling, extremely frequent office hours, internships), and foster an atmosphere of everyone helping everyone else.

    Cons

The only real problem with the environment is that sometimes it can get just a little too standardized and focused on personal attitude -- San Antonio has been open about trying to court medical business, and does so at the expense of opportunities for exploration or academic variety, both of which would serve the Health Science Center. Looking within the various departments of the various components of the institution, everyone studies very similar things, with only a few poorly-funded exceptions. And when business or social transactions take place, it's clear that you have to have the very same background as the person you're trying to communicate with if you expect two-way communication. If you're not from San Antonio, you might have a little trouble, and don't expect much career advancement -- each person knows who he or she is, and it's difficult to change that.

    Advice to Management

Don't take it easy. Focus more on results than on show.
