Pros

In terms of biological research, Excellent research center with world-leading scientist. If you are ambitious in scientific career. This is one of the best places to go. It also offers the best residency program, low cost tuition, high-quality education.

Cons

If you are MD or medical student, UTSW is no braine choice. However, if you are biology postdoc researcher, it is very likely that your life will be miserable. I am not blaming UTSW, the same thing happens in every University. The key factor is to pick a good supervisor. A good supervisor will lift you up; A bad supervisor will ruin your life. But it somehow depends on your luck. Many professors pretend to be nice at interview. But after you join the group, the evil side will be revealed. Low salary for non-tenure track faculty. Nowadays, it is much more difficult to land on a permanent job. The faculty position is very competitive, 10% postdoc researcher eventually can become independent investigator. Since the spring of biological industry has not come yet, the rest of the postdoc reseachers cannot find job in company either. just stuck in school with low salary and very long working time. completely no life. This might be changed 20 years later. Is it too late for us?
