I have been working at UT Southwestern Medical Center

Pros

State of Texas employee benefits package.
Numerous educational classes that are offered by the university.
Centrally located in the Dallas area.

Cons

You have to ask your supervisors if you can apply for a job posting in another department.
Lots of dead weight.
Each departments supervisor makes up their own set of rules,no standard applied company wide.
Different rules for employees within the same department.
Supervisors don't allow employees to attend educational classes.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Look at what supervisor are really doing. They are holding good employees back for promotions and they are keep dead weight because they are their friends. Monitor internet usage and make sure that it is job related. Track the hours that employees (and supervisors) are actually working, not a lot of empoyees work 40 hours a week.

I have been working at UT Southwestern Medical Center

    Pros

-Good benefits & retirement plans (although the health insurance is getting expensive)
-Impossible to be fired (this is also a con)
-Easy to transfer laterally between different departments if you have half a brain
-Easy to get to with DART
-The longer you work there, the more longevity pay and time off you accrue

    Cons

-Impossible to be fired, so most departments are full of dead-weight staff with the "state employee" mentality. Departments typically hope bad employees will "bid out" (transfer to another department) so they won't have to fire them, but then bad employees continually get good reviews and raises so they can be eligible to transfer
    -Status quo rules
-Hard to get promotions unless you are an expert brown noser or you already have connections
-Pathetic salaries & raises for most staff

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't be afraid to fire people who can't or won't contribute more than the bare minimum. There are Too many qualified, unemployed people out there to keep around slackers. Please reward valuable, hard-working staff with appropriate salaries and merit increases or cost-of-living adjustments. Internal promotions with 5+ years of experience should NOT be paid less than an unexperienced external hire in the same job, just because policy won't allow more than a 10% raise.
The staff realize UT Southwestern Medical Center is renowned because of the faculty, but it wouldn't run at all without the staff. Please treat us accordingly!

I have been working at UT Southwestern Medical Center

    Pros

    - Challenging projects
    - Part of an educational environment
     - Exciting to be part of a medical research facility-
    - Good retirement program and benefits

    Cons

-Seems to be lots of red tape
    - Moves slowly on changes
    - Sometimes very confusing policies and procedures
    - A little frustrating when there is not a for-profit mentality

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please make a decision and then stick to it, don't over analyze every little decision - move quickly but with care. Don't second guess decisions as this causes so much churn.
