Pros

UTI is dedicated to "changing the world, one life at a time". This isn't just a catch phrase - it's a real philosophy that everyone feels. No matter the trials (two consecutive years of reduction-in-force), we're always focused on getting our students the best education that they can possibly have. We participate in community events, have a student pantry and emergency fund that helps our students when they're in need, and the best reward is watching our students graduate into a job that they only dreamed of getting before they came to us. UTI has been around for 40 years and is entering into a dynamic period of change and growth. The end result is going to be even better, and it's really thrilling to be a part of it.

Cons

UTI started out as a small business without a vision. Senior management is just now getting a vision of where we're going and what we're doing. This trickles down to lower-level management, but slowly. There's some fumbling in the dark with things like goals (being tied to our merit increases), small merit increases, and lousy insurance (CIGNA and Spectera vision). We also have a minimal vacation policy - the standard two weeks to start. Recognition of employee successes happens, but inconsistently, and there's favoritism. There's also a lot of rivalry between the campuses and home office. We're all not quite on the same track yet.

Advice to Senior Management

Management, listen to your employees! You have great, creative employees with untapped skills, talents, and interests. Having "manager", "director", "vice president", or "president" after your name doesn't make you omniscient. Be willing to state when you're wrong and don't ask us to constantly trust you to lead us through the darkness. If you inform us of your plans early on in a project, while it's in the planning stages, we can contribute rather than stumbling along behind you, fighting for balance the whole way.
