Excellent Company that has made some not so excellent decisions of late.

Pros

Good place to work, has pretty decent benefits. The place tries hard to let you balance personal life with proffesional life.

Cons

They incorrectly decided to move to a warehouse by the airport. Has seriously created an issue with those that live north and in recruiting new persons.

    Pros

The people at Ultra were really amazing to work with. True, the previous comment about cliques was accurate, but it was not hard to find friends there, and everyone was respectful. The benefits were also very good. PTO rates improved with seniority, Christmas parties were good, as were bonuses and the small things - like free sodas and fruit. I don't mean to say that benefits were exceptional, but they were good - many other companies have similar packages. Primarily, the people made the company great. Traveling for work was a unique and usually neat benefit as well.

    Cons

I think Senior Management needs to appreciate the Engineering staff more. The market is far more competitive than they realize (even in this economy). Salaries are very low here compared to other Austin Software development companies, and the benefits don't compensate for that. Also, Senior management tended to take the employees for granted - despite a great deal if dissatisfaction with the staff, they would do things like shrink cubicles often, and move the company way out to the airport (former location was Duval and MoPac!) Couple this with a good number of layoffs and employees leaving for other opportunities, and I would say that Senior Management really needs to take a good long look at what the development staff is asking of them - and try much harder to accommodate them!.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try much harder to not take staff for granted. They are a talented bunch of individuals, and are the bread and butter of the company. The MOST worthwhile investment is them, not a building, and not website. Forcing them to choose to either sell their house and move or find a new job is not a good idea, and I think you may find that it will be difficult to attract talent so far from North Austin, especially with noncompetitive wages. More management is not the answer here. More ideas and more talent will go much much farther.

    It is what it is

I worked at Ultra Electronics Advanced Tactical Systems

    Pros

    - The work week was nominally 4 9-hour days, 1 4-hour day Friday if your workload permits
    - If you are ex-military, this is a great place to work
    - If you are able to establish and maintain the right relationships, you will be more likely to survive, regardless of technical ability

    Cons

    - When it was a smaller company it was a great place to work, but things became more process-oriented as the company grew. This isn't really a knock against ATS, just a side effect of becoming a bigger company in the defense arena. If you like that kind of environment, you know who you are.
    - If you are a senior engineer, they would like you to start to move into management after a few years, or move on. There was not really a career track for engineers.
    - If you are not ex-military, you may have a difficult time fitting in. It can be a little clique-ish.
    - The gossip problem mentioned in a previous review. It's difficult to manage your workload while fighting a whisper campaign. After a while, it's easier to just leave and get a higher-paying job.
    - Engineers had minimal schedule input. Either it was dictated to you, or the scope of the work was increased after you agreed to the schedule.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - Bigger is not always better.
    - Have a career track for engineers. Other companies do.
    - Give engineers more leverage on schedules.
