Pros

Good place to pick up skills and learn your trade. Company keeps employees well informed so does help boost moral good employee management communications.

Cons

Salaries are on the lower side of the industry average. Not much internal promotion, high staff turnover. Emplyees tend to stagnate a bit.

Advice to Management

Promote internally rather than hiring from outside. Keeps moraal high and stops the high staff turnover. Invest in internal employees for promotion.

    Cons

Company Ethos Ultra goes in waves, one minute they recruit recruit recruit. When a project reaches the end then its a massive cull and redundancies Senior management can smack of ignorance. Meetings and forums are present for staff to have a voice but seldom do they listen to what is said Its a very insular place, either your face fits or forget it. After 12 years of service I left and on my last day a HR contractor also left. The contractor got a cake, card and present in a company presentation. I got absolutley nothing, most people were unaware i was going even though some were suprised as I was heavily written into a lot of their project plans. My senior manager stayed away which was appalling. Communication between management and staff is very poor. They paid a lot of money to have a self help guru assess the company and give them two 'values' which were no blame and deep commitment. The joke became that these were renamed deep blame and no commitment. I said this to senior managers on many occassions who never even noticed the word play. When projects did go off course - any they always did - then the no blame culture was put on hold while people were fired - I think they missed the point. Ultra won the investors in people award - a few years later this was spotted in the skip! HR was contracted out which for a company that size is poor There was a huge amount of overseas travel. The company travel agent was dispensed with and people had to arrange their own. Each person was required to submit a travel request form with 3 alternative itineries and the company would pick the absolute cheapest. Sometimes a 7 hour flight direct to Toronto became a 16 hour flight via Amsterdam to Toronto to save £50

    Advice to Management

Stop looking for the cheapest solution - look for the cost effective solution People are a major asset - look after them. It is wrong for projects to go so far off course and expect everyone to work ridiculous hours with no reward to get them back on track Motivation Motivation Motivation - Senior managers need to learn how to manage and motivate people not just manage projects and business. Senior management need to consider the welfare of its staff - get HR back. Providing a counselling telephone service is not a good replacement for talking to someone if you have a personal issue
