I worked at Ultra Electronics

Pros

Good place to pick up skills and learn your trade. Company keeps employees well informed so does help boost moral good employee management communications.

Cons

Salaries are on the lower side of the industry average. Not much internal promotion, high staff turnover. Emplyees tend to stagnate a bit.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Promote internally rather than hiring from outside. Keeps moraal high and stops the high staff turnover. Invest in internal employees for promotion.

I have been working at Ultra Electronics

    Pros

    Pockets of very talented people
Interesting and challenging projects to work on
    Easy access
    Respectable benefits package
    Opportunities for global travel

    Cons

There appears to be a complete breakdown in trust between the management team and those who are expected to deliver the work.

Project planning is a joke - there is no discussion, let alone negotiation, between the workforce and the management about the approach or estimation - which leads to an endless cycle of firefighting which ever area is most in crisis today. Resource planning does not happen, so most people are allocated over several projects and priorities change almost daily

Project resourcing is done on a shoestring - management call this "lean" !

Morale amongst the workforce is the lowest I have ever experienced. The deep commitment / no blame culture is not observable in my office. People are delegated tasks but not given any level of empowerment to do their job - and then get moaned about behind their backs when results are not forthcoming

Management focus on the cost of everything, but the value of nothing

Management take confidence in the mountains of documented operating procedures, that actually say you very little and cause endless confusion amonst the workforce

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your people face to face & show a human side - don't reduce it to a form filling exercise
Read a book on employee engagement
Management team desparately need some people management skills - and if they are unable to perform - then get someone in who can. Don't tolerate poor performance when you know it exists
