Brought in from the outside to "change the culture" - that was a lie, still great place to start a career

    Pros

Great work/life balance. SO many different business units and opportunities to move into Benefits above average Beautiful campus in Camas, WA Laid back environment - easy going people.

    Cons

Bureaucratic Management incompetence Low morale Customers are dissatisfied with inefficient pricing/turn around times "Playing the game" pays at UL

    Advice to Management

There is such a disconnect between middle/upper management and what is actually happening on the front lines. UL has some really dedicated workers, but the culture created by management really throws the wet towel on any ambition generated. I received a verbal warning for approaching a VP after he invited us to come and talk to them after a meeting and ask questions - many at UL have told me that voicing your opinion is career suicide. Fix the management structure, and this could be a GREAT company to work for.

    Pros

Used to be good work-life balance but its slowly dying. If you dont want to work hard, you can hide easily. Playing the game pays off

    Cons

Some of the pros are obviously cons Movement up is based on who didnt get promoted last time Low pay and inability to recognize talent and hard workers; or at least reward them

    Advice to Management

Realize you are the problem oftentimes and so are the old-time workers who slack like crazy. Stop being afraid to actually make a change that is drastic; blow up the "system" we use and start over for once rather than re-tweaks every year. If employees are bad at their job, fire them and reward the hard workers.
