Pros

The HQ functions are largely geographically distributed which presents unique experiences for managers even at low/mid-ranks. Competing against strong companies requires a view of delivering on customer expectations at a global level.

Cons

A very challenging business with very strong competitors. Low profitability which poses a constant and demoralizing threat.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Create a stronger sense of "one company" and support in the collaboration between the different (and sometimes competing) organizations. Consolidate the flow of information impacting the business from the local companies to the HQ in a fashion that allows the HQ prioritize its focus on the most impacting projects.
Make middle-management more accountable for their actions - this is a personal feeling.

    Pros

The work is interesting, due to complexity of integrations with other products and software development groups around the world. The environment is pleasantly casual, people are friendly, the work hours are reasonable.

    Cons

The company is now a joint venture with the Gores group and lost it's research and engineering edge. It had been cutting costs for the last few years.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Find a way to get some of the engineering edge back!

I have been working at Unify full-time

    Pros

    - Low work load
    - Flexible hours
    - Friendly environment
    - Free pop

    Cons

    - NO career advancement, employee is just a resource. As a developer, you are not rewarded for your technical skills and outstanding design, but you are recognized for completing tasks on-time without quality.
    - Behind in technology, management is very conservative on innovation.
    - Emphasis on documentation over coding, too many talkers too few workers.
    - Quality is 2nd-priority compared to timelines, burning EV on project plan is more important than design.
    - Low morale, and the management has done nothing to fix it. You are just a resource, not an employee.
    - No budget for equipment ... how to develop and test without them !!??

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus on innovation, design, and quality! Developers' strengths are coding and problem solving, not Microsoft WORD / EXCEL / OUTLOOK.
