Current Employee - Associate Finance Manager in Englewood Cliffs, NJ

I have been working at Unilever full-time (more than 3 years)

Pros

- International assignments if you are willing to relocate

Cons

- Almost no opportunities for promotions
- You have to be a "lister" to be even considered for a promotion/manager level position.
- No training given to new hires
- Salaries are differentiated based on your educational qualifications and not your job role. Eg. you could be at the same position as another employee but earning $10k-15k lower than them as they have a higher qualification
- Very political environment
- Managers are not trained to manage/coach people. There isn't much differentiation in the job role of an employee and his manager. So you could be doing exactly the same work as your manager but of course earning lesser.

I have been working at Unilever full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Big company, lots of opportunity if you are flexible and can move around the world. Great entry level job, but then get out by the time you make it to manager. Nice sustainability agenda.

    Cons

Zero growth in NJ. Less upper management roles every year. Downsize and restructuring is the norm. Work life balance is poor. Leadership does not deliver. Leadership is encouraging an up or out mentality... meaning if you are not promoted in a couple years, you will be let go.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be careful what you wish for as you'll be losing a lot of your top talent.

I worked at Unilever full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

    Great culture and work environment
Very focused on employee development - that is good for you :)
    Exposure to world-class brands
For those that like to travel - there are global opportunities

    Cons

Not a decision culture - not enough employees are not empowered to make decisions
That results in way too many meetings that require too much analysis and too little action

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep up the good work on the culture, but, allow for a little more empowerment
