I worked at Union Pacific full-time (more than 5 years)

Pros

Great money and benefits. Fun job, not stuck in a cubicle. Good opportunities for young people or hard workers

Cons

Terrible lifestyle. Always on call. Have to be there awhile to get enough seniority to hold a regular schedule. Union is soft.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire managers with practical experience, not college kids who have never railroaded.

I have been working at Union Pacific full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Good place to work, good pay and benifets. Lots of security we haven't had a layoff since 2000, Excellent vacation plan and 401K program.

    Cons

Managment is trying to get to involved in the day to day work program. I think they should back off and let the supervisors do their job.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Let your supervisors do their jobs in the production phase.

IT department politics, frustration among co-workers, disrespect, very hard to be rational.

I have been working at Union Pacific full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Like other railroads UP offers good retirement benefits

    Cons

All sorts of issues in IT department, from managers to AVPs the management is unable to focus on supporting the railroad instead spending all of its energy prompting and supporting favorites.

Management is focusing on hiring more and more offshore contractors due to the fact that it cost a lot less ending up hiring five to ten times more offshore resources than needed which eventually cost a lot more.

People are being moved around to make room for favorites instead of supporting the talented.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

A lot of talented people are leaving the company due to management’s failure to utilize resources. Please spend time understanding how and where resources can be utilized.
