Current Employee - Information Technologies Intern in Omaha, NE

I have been working at Union Pacific as an intern for less than a year

Pros

Good company and good attitude towards safety and productivity.

Cons

Work was somewhat monotonous, and Omaha is a boring area to spend one's life, tho I know that isn't UP's fault.

I have been working at Union Pacific full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

The pay is great when they don't lay you off twice a year so that they can make their yearly dollar amount. Those high and mighty people in the company have to get their million dollar bonuses each year which means that the ones who really run the company, engineer's, conductors, etc get laid off around Thanksgiving and stay that way until after the first of the year.

The medical benefits are great as are some of their other little perks to working there. Other than what I have posted so far they are a good company to work for if you are just starting out and have the patients that it takes to hold onto your job during the layoffs that they have each year.

    Cons

During these said layoffs employee's have lost their homes, cars, marriages just to name a few. Think about the many Christmas's that they have had to nickle and dime themselves just to put a toy under the tree for their child who doesn't understand what is going on.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

My advice to Management would be to keep your guys working year round, give up your millions that you get in bonus's at the end of the year. Think a little about what you are putting the people who really run the railroad throu - the employee's, the engeneer's, the conductors etc. You as Management have your Christmas Parties while your employee's have nothing but a $20.00 walmart gift card.

I have been working at Union Pacific full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Great pay and benefits if you can stand the politics

    Cons

They like to hire and get you away from your job so they can lay you off so bonuses can be paid. While some are in food stamp lines. Managers are getting million dollar bonuses. Then the think that the furloughed people will come back for more abuse. All they want to do is make record profits to show the stock holders good numbers. They don't care if you lose your house or vehicle because you got laid off. They don't care that you only see your family in passing in or out the door coming home or going out in 10 hours later. Why should they care they work 5 days a week and get million dollar bonuses off your work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to the work force while you still have enough people to do the work. People are leaving in bunches to go to other railroads that treat them like people not numbers. The educated idiots that never worked in railroad or did anything that has to do with railroad, should not be in management. Warren Buffet gave some advise that was not listened to about management.
