Union Pacific Railroad – “Employment stability offset by low work/life balance

Oct 11, 2008

4.0

Union Pacific Railroad Operations Manager:   (Current Employee)

Pros

Compensation and, more importantly, retirement is extremely nice. Career opportunities will be plentiful in the next five to ten years. Close to 25% of Union Pacific Railroad's employee base will be retiring in this time frame.

Cons

Work/life balance is not extremely important. Much of senior management deny this to be an issue. When this topic is brought up for discussion, the typical response is "I worked those hours when I was younger and I survived." Another fine response is "if you want to climb the ladder, you must work tons of hours."

Advice to Senior Management

Work/life balance is important to your employees. Working tons of hours shouldn't be a prerequisite for advancement within our company. Effective managers and leaders should pave the way for Union Pacific Railroad going forward.
