Unisys is a stable but uninspired company that could be easily replaced by any one of a hundred others.

Pros

Unisys has a flexible atmosphere, not high stress, good work-life balance and many employees working remotely. Remote access and conference calling are common. There is a strong management embrace of information sharing through internal social media technology, though it is not widely used by employees.

Cons

Unisys, or at least the Federal Systems division, seems to be going nowhere. HQ is staffed by an older workforce, many of whom seem to be here simply because this is where they are. Morale-building efforts to counteract austerity measures of the last few years are very weak, there is little in the way of loyalty or a sense of a Unisys identity. Recognitions beyond a boss's "attaboy" are rare, salaries are stagnant. Middle management priorities seem to bounce from one crisis to the next, rarely in line with the larger company direction.

Advice to Management

The continued financial strengthening of the company, and the focus on a few key service areas, is helping employees to feel more secure about the long-term health of the company. The employee performance review process and the annual goals are not trickling down to drive performance at the field level.

    Pros

Decent pay coming from the outside (no increases once inside) Friendly co-workers Home-Work balance tele-commute opportunities basic corporate benefits easy to out smart your management team

    Cons

The core culture never changes from chairman to chairman. I was there for over 25 years and am SO glad I left to experience how real companies operate and value people. Talent, education, innovation, agility. All of these attributes are trumped by the length of time you spent in the 80's and 90's fixing customers Burroughs and Sperry machines. The middle management is comprised of ex-repair personnel who reached the apex of their Peter Principle three jobs and 20 yrs ago. 1190 Series or A Series technical training far outweighs any formal education and even MBA's when it comes to staffing true decision making management positions requiring real "management" skill sets. This limited lack of vision that is demonstrated by this contingent of uneducated and "nothing-other-than-Unisys" experienced individuals is the true reason that this firm is stuck and will continue to be stuck in this 30 year old quicksand until someone has the guts to take the short term hit to cost and remove these good ol' boys and start fresh with new blood. A new energized culture change is the only answer for this company to be productive and and be even slightly relevant in the next 5 years.

    Advice to Management

Heed the advice written above from a senior Dir. who has managed organizations in NA, EMEA and LA-APAC and seen first hand how this archaic majority of management is, and has been for decades, ruining this once proud and profitable corporation. Bite the bullet and dismiss this incompetent group of "hanger-ons"
