United Airlines Senior Planner in Chicago, IL:   (Current Employee)

Pros

UA has always been pretty good at promoting from within the company. It's reasonable to expect that many middle and upper-level managers have been promoted from within the company rather than having been hired from the outside. The airline industry is exciting and always changing, and the people who work here are loyal and want to see the company succeed.

Cons

The pay is not equitable with similar work outside of the company. UA is not a place that provides an incredible amount of job security. And, like any big corporation, office politics often decides who gets the peachy assignments and promotions.

Advice to Senior Management

Start paying attention to what your employees want to accomplish in terms of career advancement. Put them in positions where they can use their skills instead of always "reorganizing" and putting them in positions where they're just filling a spot. Ask them what they would like to do and then make a plan to help them get there.
