I have been working at United Launch Alliance full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

The IAM represents the hourly workforce. You get to build the Worlds best launch vehicles, with proven track records. The hourly workers are great, intelligent hard workers. Most WANT to do a great job. They pump you up and call you a national asset.

    Cons

We are WAY to top heavy. When there is a layoff, management and HR are off limits. We have a contractor that hires new employees, and a 1-800 number for the rest. Very slow to change. We spend way too much money on stupid things, and not enough on the people that actually build the rocket and make the money. Upper management has the mentality that the worker is just light labor and not a value to the Company. They don't treat you as a national asset.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

When layoffs do occur, start at the Top and see where you can save. HR is used for planning parties, we could save a million a year in salaries alone by cutting that department in half. Spread the wealth among all employees. Management isn't the ones saving money, and buildingtherockets.

I have been working at United Launch Alliance full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Competitive salary and usually a yearly bonus
    Good industry
    Mostly great people (non-managers)

    Cons

CEO and some VP's disrespect their employees
    Top heavy management team
Recognition and raises generally reserved for managers
Inputs from below are often ignored
Mass employee demotions are used to cut costs
    Demoralized workforce
Poor job stability unless you are a new college grad (experienced workforce is being pushed out to save money)
    It's hard to move up
Avoid this place (see CEO's approval rating)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus is on perfect deliveries, but the staff here is treated like cheap furniture, with expected affect on employee morale. The board of directors should fire the CEO, bring in a people-oriented exec to run ULA, cut 1/2 of the management heads, and give most employees a raise.
