Pros

If you produce results you will keep your job. Good job to have if you like weekends off and don't want any hassle when it is time to request vacation. Set work schedule so planning off work activities is easy. The benefits are decent.

Cons

Most of the management all the way up to regional level is unaware what it really takes to grow market share in this very competitive industry.

Very subpar equipment compared to most of the competitors.

There is a good old boy culture that doesn't realize or understand the intelligence and needs of the current customer base.

Very shady hiring and firing practices. They will hire your replacement before you know your employment is terminated.

United is infested with people that produce no results and do very little on a daily basis but are still employed because they were hired when the money flowing in the door and they were able to take credit for the major economic growth.

The system of general rental and aerial divisions servicing the same projects and customers is a complete mess. If you work for general rental, the aerial division IS your competitor regardless of what management tells you.

The branches are hurting for fleet and are severely understaffed.

    I have been working at United Rentals

    Pros

    UR is ahead of the industry. They are very focused and driven on staying ahead of the curve. Great place to work.

    Cons

    The industry itself is very fast paced and every day technology and systems are changing. Government regulations tend to make this industry more complicated than it should be.

    Everything seems to be going very well. I am happy with our leadership and proud to part of hte team.

    Pros

    If you are an out-going person and like working with equipment and the people who use them, you will gain alot of contacts working here. If you are blessed with a managment team that gives you direction and allows you to get involved with every aspect of operations, as I have, you will gain knowledge and skills that will carry you through more possibilties that you can imagine. The best part is if you are a mediocre worker, and are employed there just for a paycheck, you only have to show up on time and do the minimum to keep you job... until you die or get let go for reasons that have nothing to do with you. Oh, and if you are let go, down expect ANY NOTICE.

    Cons

    You will learn how to get around micro-management so that you can actually help the customer and do the job that keeps the doors open. You will have to justify every minute you are on the clock which will slow down your productivity. You will be asked to get something done immediatley and then be bogged down in red tape. You will have to work with people who create an un-safe work environment, until, after months, they are fired. You will have to deal with your daily priorities being changed every fifteen minutes. You will have to deal with management's daily attitude swings. You not be able to trust anyone..expecially human resources to side with you in any conflict. If you start at a bottom position, you will have to be taught "on the Job" and take the consequences for inefficiency or bad desicions. You will only be praised during store meetings. You will have to eat alot of corporate propaganda, or what I call BS. No matter what anyone says, you will only be making a wage, pay for your own retirement, (if you are lucky), and health insurance. No other incentives will actually come through for you. The best part you can look forward to is deteriorating health due to MAJOR daily stress. So, when the day comes you have worked four hours and you feel it was like ten hours....it's time to move on.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Get rid of Kneeland. Most people don't know that when UR got hit with the fourteen million dollar fine from the SEC, he was the CFO. Now he's the CEO and the company is going down the tubes FAST! See the correlation? Go back and look at the way US Rentals was run. It should be the model that should be STRICKLY adhered to. Look back in RER magazine, ther was an article about the owner of a major rental company that retired but still held the majority of the company. After a couple of years, he noticed his income declining. He went to the headquarters and found those running the company built a huge bureaucracy that was eating away at major profits. He fired all but four VP's all the way down to the Store Manager. He then made himself available to those managers if the vice presidents were not helping them. That company recorded the largest turn around and increase in profits since it's beginning in six months...A LIE? Check it yourself. Just like today's government, if you never hear any critisism, you are not getting the whole picture! Finally, "CORPORATION" is the number one most filthiest word in the english language today, cwatch the news, and same-o-same-o is not helping build good relations with the customers you are ignoring but expect to get money from.
