I worked at United States Department of Energy

Pros

-usual government perks (flexible hours, benefits, regular promotions)
-room for training and career advancement
-good government expirinece to have
-breadth of areas to get involved in and interested in

Cons

-usual government drawbacks (pay is less competitive over time, proceedural inertia, apathy)
-despite room for personal advancement, there is less room for intellectual advancement

Advice to ManagementAdvice

HR processes must be streamlined, and some of the training requirements are absolutely innane and wasteful. As with all agencies, greater coordination among offices within the agency and outside of it is essential.

    Pros

Work is nationally and internationally compelling. Hours are great. Lots of meetings with VIPs and Washington players. Lots of international travel. Policy issues are relevant.

    Cons

Bureaucracy. Bureaucracy. Bureaucracy. That About sums it up.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I would pass on working at DOE. Instead, try working at State or Treasury. Issues often can be the same.
