I worked at United Technologies as an intern (less than an year)

Pros

Work for one of the biggest aerospace companies in the world.
The company isn't going to go under any time soon.
Pay for interns is excellent.

Cons

There is no central organization for interns so what you do will vary significantly depending on your boss. If you are lucky you will have work. If you are extremely lucky, you will have interesting work, but most interns barely get any work and sit around bored every day.

Monotony of working in a cubicle farm for a huge company.

Since the company is so big, things move so slowly. There is so much legal red tape and BS that you have to work through.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Organize the intern program better. You attract a lot of people with high pay, but don't do a good job keeping them.

I have been working at United Technologies full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Large, well known company. Bright, talented professional staff.

    Cons

Management does not know how to convey needs. Promises of upward mobility vanish as you walk in the door. The number of people being promoted is small and the number of people promoted after mid 30s is extremely small. Ludacris disparity in compensation between L3/L4 (L4 is entry and L3 is first promotion for an attorney). L4 comes with no bonus, no stock options, and very small raises (3% or less), and you can be in that position for years if not your entire UTC career, which is not why a well educated and experienced attorney comes to this highly prestigious company. In addition, you will work harder than you worked at a firm, which would be fine under the right circumstances.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

With the company changing so quickly (business unit restructuring), and with a much smaller chance of promotion for most (number of L3 and L2 positions decreasing with the restructuring), please fix the compensation scheme to remove the "have" and "have-not" hierarchy. Most would be much happier.

I worked at United Technologies full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Large company, many divisions, including overseas. Major aerospace and manufacturing. Lots of opportunity to move between sites or divisions, especially in CT area.

    Cons

Culture is primarily about short term financial results and less about their people. Long term employees seem resigned to sticking it out and hoping they dont get caught in next round of layoffs.
