Pros

The Employee Scholar Program is very good. They will cover the expenses up front and will pay for one degree per level(1 Masters, 1 Bachelor, 1 Associates). They make sure you try to have a work-life balance; they are very flexible with the time you can come in the morning and leave as long as you do your minimum of 40 hrs per week for salary employees. There are many opportunities for career development in terms of employee network groups and networking events. Prepare yourself educationally and take advantage of the benefits that are available to you.

Cons

Due to the many benefits they provide, sometimes their pay may be less compared to other companies. Not all managers are used to recognize employees for a job well done even though they have recognition awards. You have to lookout for your own career development because otherwise you may stay in the same position for many years.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Recognize employees more often, increase the pay scale for outstanding employees and let employees pursue another Masters degree even if they already pursued one. You will decrease the employee turnover.

    Stable company, generates a lot of cash
    Lots of growth opportunities for ambitious folks who are mobile
    Decent benefits & compensation

    Cons

    Long Hours
    Longer Hours
    Shareholders are more important than employees
    UTC will readily close an operation if the costs can be reduced.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    With such a deep management bench, UTC should acquire companies more aggressively. They have the young talent that is hungry for new challenges and could be deployed into these new businesses

    Pros

    UTRC offers a very wide variety of technical project options to work on;
    The technical & engineering staff is extraordinary, and among the best in the world;
    UTRC offers an excellent vantage point into all UTC businesses, and is great place to learn about UTC;
    The Employee Scholar Program used to be the best in class...now, it's only slightly better than peer companies.

    Cons

    The organization lacks any serious leverage with the business units and constantly struggles with sustaining long term research vision. Programs are started and stopped on short notice in response to funding surges and cut-backs from the BUs. Maximum visibility of funding is 1year for any program; "5-year" roadmaps are annually created...and re-edited.

    While some process discipline is necessary in any organization, UTRC has taken it to a level that appears to be counter-productive to the "research & innovation" theme. Everything is so rigidly structured that lateral thinking and risk taking happen more as anomalies.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    UTRC needs to redefine itself by re-emphasizing technical innovation & long term research that enables pursuit of multi-year, high-risk low-payback technology development necessary to achieve the mission statement of "changing the game" for the BUs.
