I have been working at United Way full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

They paid very well for a non-profit organization. The local United Way agency here supports more than 80 member agencies. That can give an individual experience working with a variety of organizations and really getting a good understanding of the non-profit landscape in Charlotte.

    Cons

They were recently rocked by some scandal here in Charlotte. That led to reduced revenue and some layoffs. In general, the board is made up largely of corporate reps and the leadership in stable but not cutting edge or forward thinking.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be more progressive and get some representation from the community on the board.

I have been working at United Way full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Social mission, feel good to help others, generally nice people work here.

    Cons

No pay, minimal benefits, no growth opportunity, deadend job. Managers have no skills in managing, consistent throughout organization.
Good place to volunteer or come if you not looking for pay, recognition, or growth and have other means to fulfill those needs.
    Does not promote from within!!!!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Step out of old thinking and find ways to recognize and acknowlege talent on staff and get some management/business skills so can run more organization more successfully.
Find ways to develop and nurture internal talent.
