I have been working at United Way part-time (less than an year)

Pros

Creating community change
Flexible working conditions (working from home in bad weather, flex start/end times to accommodate family commitments)
Great people to work with!

Cons

Constant "political" considerations/tensions to consider
Seems like the only thing that is constant is indeed change
Don't feel like there is a lot of upward mobility from current position

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Great job overall.

I have been working at United Way full-time

    Pros

Can't really think of anything positive to say about this place other than their stated mission is admirable. How well they carry out their mission is another topic entirely. My experience was in Phoenix, AZ, so it may not be applicable to all locations.

    Cons

Lots of interdepartmental infighting over handling of grants and funds. No real cooperation among team members. They're accounting is also a complete mess. I will never donate another dime to this organization.

Communications and Marketing Internship at United Way of North Central Florida

Former Employee - Communications and Marketing Intern in Gainesville, FL
Former Employee - Communications and Marketing Intern in Gainesville, FL

I worked at United Way as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

    -Co-workers were very nice
-Added one or two items to my portfolio
    -Experience working in non-profits

    Cons

    -Unpaid Internship
-Often not given assignments or continued working on assignments that leadership decided were not going to happen anymore but did not inform me
-My job title did not describe my duties. I did anything and everything. For example: painting a banner, organizing a supply closet, Googling addresses so that they were correct, etc. There were many times that I felt I wasn't gaining anything out of the internship at all.
