I have been working at UnitedHealth Group

Pros

High-profile projects, many businesses within the group. Dynamic. Ambitious people.

Cons

Cutthroat competitiveness that starts at the top and never stops. If you want to spend half your day making sure someone else gets the blame that something didn't complete the day before it actually began, and you don't mind sacrificing others, it might be the place for you. Benefits are appalling for a healthcare company. Corporate infrastructure is a morass.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Encourage more good work and discourage clawing to the top.

    Pros

If you can work in the system you can earn a decent living. The rewards were much better when their stock was a high perfomer. Salaries are below maket, but the benefit package is ok. If you can fit into their system there are opportunities to advance by moving between departments and divisions.

    Cons

Management is ruthless and has little regard for employees. It is definetly a "results at all costs" organization. The Human Resources department is really just a computer program. The bonus programs they have are very confusing, and typically you have no idea how to win in the system. Goals come from the top down with not logic. The goals tend to be extremmly high and very unreasonable. They justify this by saying "it's what our stockholders must have!"

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Recognize the value of your employees more.

Flexibility for those who are favorites.

    I worked at UnitedHealth Group

    Pros

There are some great flexibility options when working for this company. Most jobs allow you to telecommute some, if not all, of your hours. However, there are no clearly defined goals or metrics to meet before being given that privilege. Medical coverage covers quite a bit. Most facilities have a nice cafeteria and gym.

    Cons

Medical coverage is extremely expensive, especially when considering deductible amounts, and co-insurance. Management promotes and gives privileges to employees based upon favoritism. Most HR policies are often thrown out the window, and management often makes up their own rules to play by. Environment can get very gossipy. Communication is terrible, and often too late. Often the only recognition employees get is when something is done incorrectly. Too much mismanagement and micromanagement.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Improve communication between middle management and the people on the front lines. Stop promoting based upon politics and favorites, but rather who can do the job and improve the company. Create an atmosphere where people are encouraged to contribute and be creative. Promoting the mediocre workers simply because they go to happy hour with upper management is not the way to run a company.
