Pros

Solid National health insurance company with outstanding vision, values, and culture

Cons

Difficult corporate culture merger with legacy Pacificare Prescription Solutions (now OptumRx) division, particularly in IT.

Advice to Management

Dig deeper in the Prescription Solutions division and be prepared to replace hands-on managers and supervisors with more dynamic UHG management, as there is still lots of dead wood and isolationists in the trenches.

    Pros

Connextions has many changes, as it is a call center, and there are always opportunities withing the company. If an account closes the company will give you options internally so you are not laid off.

    Cons

Pay increases and salaries are not very competitive, and if moving from one account to another there is many times a decrease in pay.

    Advice to Management

Focus on pay increases and competitive salaries as well as letting a employee keep their existing pay when moving to a different account.

    Pros

    Opportunity to telecommute if approved.

    Cons

A lot of favoritism regarding promotions, access to educational funding. Dictator approach to managing employees. A lot of programs created at the corporate level are not support by management. The parent company UHG is very disconnected with the other business segment.

    Advice to Management

Have VP, Directors and Manager compensation also be based on the number of employees promoted, employees who obtain additional training, certifications or degree with their team and their own engagement with their team. Matrix could be set to measure their effectiveness in this area. Executive Senior Management needs to hold their management team more accountable and exhibit the thing they are asking of line staff. VPs Directors and Manager are poor examples of employee engagement, and innovativeness. Move from a Authoritarian, Dictatorship approach to a Collaborative Synergistic approach. The company executives need to look at Johnson and Johnson as a model and read the book, "All in, " by Chester Elton. He also wrote the Carrot Principle.
