I have been working at UnitedHealth Group full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    Opportunity to telecommute if approved.

    Cons

A lot of favoritism regarding promotions, access to educational funding. Dictator approach to managing employees. A lot of programs created at the corporate level are not support by management. The parent company UHG is very disconnected with the other business segment.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Have VP, Directors and Manager compensation also be based on the number of employees promoted, employees who obtain additional training, certifications or degree with their team and their own engagement with their team. Matrix could be set to measure their effectiveness in this area. Executive Senior Management needs to hold their management team more accountable and exhibit the thing they are asking of line staff. VPs Directors and Manager are poor examples of employee engagement, and innovativeness. Move from a Authoritarian, Dictatorship approach to a Collaborative Synergistic approach. The company executives need to look at Johnson and Johnson as a model and read the book, "All in, " by Chester Elton. He also wrote the Carrot Principle.

I worked at UnitedHealth Group full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Pay and benefits are average. Good place to learn how health care works. IT appeared to have good processes in place for portfolio management, development and testing.

    Cons

I worked on the Corporate business side with many layers of management. In many cases no clear concensus of who is is the decision maker. Very high turnover when you count employees leaving UHG, contractors leaving and employees moving from department to department seeking sanity. Management appeared to have very good technical or operational skills, but their people skills as manageers was dismal at best.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Save a ton of mony by cutting down the layers of management. Let people do what you hire them for, not to duplicate the efforts of others so their management looks like they are doing something.
