I guess it depends on the department

I have been working at UnitedHealth Group

Pros

Good growth and learning opportunities, good raises if you're a high performer, good management but it all depends on what department/team you're in as I've heard other departments can be a nightmare. Wish they were more willing to promote on the basis of skill and not on the basis of how long you've been there.

Cons

Generally don't hire young, new people

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take a chance on fresh graduates and train them up.

It is a large company and it is very difficult to matriculate. It is all based on " who you know, not what you know"

I have been working at UnitedHealth Group full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

If you are a go getter and a hard worker you will sustain. Work life balance is great. The ability to telecommute is great and really can save time and gas and increase productivity if given the opportunity.

    Cons

The employee driven promotion culture is a joke since it is about who you know. You are a grain of sand in the sand box. The company is large and has a diffcullt time with propering training when it comes to the managment teams.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please put the right talent in the right positions and truly understand that you are managing tasks, not people. Try to make more of an effort to streamline and even out the playing field when it comes to promoting within the company, otherwise great talent walks out the door because they are underpaid and under appreciated.

I worked at UnitedHealth Group full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Very smart people with access to amazing data. They have the potential to do some really interesting impactful things in healthcare.

    Cons

There is no doubt you are now working for a large insurance company that is not particularly tech product savvy. Lots of internal politics.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you want to be a tech company, hire tech people and enable them with appropriate tools.
