Pros

My team consisted of both Accenture and UHG employees, however, it was the most connected, productive team I've ever been on. Both leaders were extremely inclusive and driven, gave the team the flexibility & tools to manage a demanding work schedule with family - was a great experience!

Cons

Outside of current area, there was not a lot of appealing opportunities for career advancement.

Where focus is on the stockholder and the employee is an afterthought. But It wasn't always this way.

    Pros

Organization is very welcoming at the onset. Benefits are ok and better than may organizations, not as good as many other healthcare companies. Includes Medical, Dental, Vision, 401k with partial matching, espp (which is actually quite good, those that don't participate in the UNH ESPP are missing a huge opportunity). Work at home is possible for many (if not all) positions and moving up is possible for those who want to "marry" the company. Opportunities to learn new functions and skills are available to those who want to learn. Discounts for many products and services are available.

    Cons

Organization has primarily grown through mergers and acquisitions not by attracting them. Everything is in a constant state of chaos, employees of organizations acquired by UHG jump ship as soon as they can because they know UHG will close their facility as they have a established history of doing. Ethical behavior (from the leadership down) seems only something put on a flyer or in a HR training. In practice ethics seem to be ignored or vaguely practiced because the focus is always to reduce costs and increase profit. Work life balance is non existent if you are beyond a entry level position, want time off and have a higher level position? Don't hold your breath. You'll probably need to go on disability to get it. Time off is a grant so you can't even get paid for it if you can't take it (so the company just can add it back to their profits.)

    Advice to Management

It should be obvious when teams of people leave the organization month after month. The talented who honestly care about the organization are burnt to a crisp. Even the brightest executive level employees are toast within a few years. Look at statistics of employees you will see some trends, if you can't... then numbers that ad's state are so important are just a slogan, not a philosophy.

    Pros

The company contributes $1000 per year into your Health Savings Account.

    Cons

Average benefits, very high co-pays on drugs which is why you are given a $1000 contribution. Even for generics. This is a former PacifiCare site which was acquired. A lot of those old guard are still here and there is always culture clashes between the way things used to be done versus the UHG way. Some teams average 1-2 resignations per month (this includes the managers and supervisors). Some departments have entire staffs who have all been there less than a year.

Do not think this is the kind of organization where you will be retiring from. I'm not above working hard, but your hard work will not be appreciated. It will be taken for granted until you leave and they bring in the new crop. There motto is 'we eat our young' because you come in for one to three years, they take all they can from you then discard you. If you are older with a family be advised. Life work balance is somewhat discouraged. Sick kids, etc. are career killers.

    Advice to Management

More than anything I am truly disappointed with the middle managers. From the outside there seems to be a lot of potential, but the execution is lacking.
