Typical large insurance company, poor management, too much bureaucracy.

I worked at UnitedHealth Group full-time (more than 3 years)

Pros

I made lifelong friends at this job which was meaningful and significant. It was easy to get hired at the time, and those that were in charge of keeping up company morale put a lot of effort into it, even if they weren't 100% successful.

Cons

Frequent layoffs and a fast turnover, however, they did not replace employees that left. Therefore workloads were increased but not met with matching salary increases. Very small raises, few bonuses. Too many virtual employees. Didn't feel valued. Management did not work well together.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay your employees what they deserve so they stay at the job. People want to work there but they don't feel compensated. And if you are increasing someone's workload, give them the title and respect they deserve for taking on a leadership position, instead of taking advantage of their loyalty and commitment to the job.

    Pros

Can be a great place to grow and advance. Plenty of opportunity to develop and expand skills and ability that is of value to the corporation.

    Cons

Often is very difficult to move through the ranks into senior management. Seems there is more interest in hiring those who move frequently between companies into the upper levels of management instead of promoting within and retaining the institutional knowledge developed over years of service.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Many of the most valuable employees leave due to the culture of hiring from outside and not considering long term employees that often would serve the company better and with more loyalty.

Overall a great company (Optum), industry leader and lots of challenges despite the red tape

    Pros

Industry leader. Some of the best technology and people in the business. Compensation is in line with industry and top performers are usually rewarded. Generally a good culture and programs in place to back this up. I worked in a distributed workforce with many telecommuters which made this more difficult.

    Cons

Management shuffles lead to RIFs so that new leaders can make an impact on bottom line without thinking about investing for the future or the employees that got them there. I became an employee through an acquisition and continued to receive top ratings for a couple years and when a new Sr. Management structure took over I was let go as part of a RIF without given an opportunity to find a new home. IT projects move at glacial speed due to red tape.
