I worked at Universal Laser Systems full-time (more than 5 years)

Pros

I would have to agree with the previous reviews, great staff, decent pay, and pretty good environment.

Cons

Again, I agree with the previous reviews. There is nearly ZERO advancement and the benefits are terrible (no retirement plan and horrible insurance). There are no reviews, therefore, you will never receive a raise, ever, whether it be for cost of living or performance.
The company only hires from without, which is an indication of how it treats it's employees. In other words, they hire for a position but then management believes that your ideas are worthless. This leads to EXTREME micromanagement and lack of direction. Imagine a ship at sea in a storm without a rudder, that would pretty much describe the management ethos and performance.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

There is a great amount of potential in the employees that have been hired. They are your greatest asset, utilize them. Employees bring ideas and experience to the table, this in an incalculable asset to ANY company. It would be nice it management could see this and not grind this asset to dust under their micromanagement heel.

    Pros

Work Environment was pleasant and enjoyable. Most people are very easy to get along with.

    Cons

    The Beginning-
You start working there with a vision of success with a great company. Everyone is nice and you get along great. Many Ideas that you have in order to help further developed process are considered and sometimes implemented. You feel encouraged to push yourself to do well and work cohesively with the teams.

    Intermediate Stage-
Change, Change, Change - nothing is ever consistent. You continuously work on projects over and over until they simply decide to change direction all together. You can work on a project for months only to have it thrown away. There is little/no chain of command, there is one person at the top and there is everyone else to do what that person wants. Anyone who challenges that person's power or knowledge will immediately get shut down or demoted. People rarely speak up to change processes and styles that would be effective for company growth. If you are a "Yes, man" this is the perfect job for you. It is soon realized that certain individuals work there with zero validity to the growth and success of the company. "what do they do here??" No one knows.

There is no opportunity for growth in ANY position, not departmentally, or financially. There are no raise negotiations. Your financial increase is based on the company as a whole, not your own individual production and contribution. There is no retirement plan, and the salary is not high enough to accommodate for that. No matter what company, your own financial and personal growth should not be dependent upon the success of someone else. If the sales team is failing in any given month, you are paying for it yourself. There are some serious 'Heavy hitters" on the sales team and they don't make what they deserve.

Anything reported to HR just gets swept under the rug. Things will just continue to happen until you get upset.

    The END-

Everyone is unhappy there, but in this economy, you take what you can keep. So many people want to leave, but they recognize if they stay under the radar and do what they are told, they'll work there forever.

There is no incentive to work harder at your job, nothing to push you to be better. If you work less but get done what you are told, nothing will change. It is not a good way to make a company better. Knowing you will not get a raise, it a very difficult concept to accept, but it's a steady paycheck.

There were #1 in the industry at the beginning now, they are number 4. It is a sinking ship. If you want to drown in falling company, but want a steady job never accomplishing anything, this is the company for you.

If you do take a position there, then realize after all I've said, I was right. When you're looking for a new job and a new employer sits you down, How will you answer these questions....What did you do there? How did you grow as an employee? I couldn't answer those questions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Have faith and trust within your employees to make the company better. They've all come from bigger and better companies in an effort to help the company grow and be the best. Many of them have valid and important things that can help make this company better. You don't know everything. You don't know everything. You don't know everything.

    Pros

Nice people, nice atmosphere, nice location, decent pay.

    Cons

Utter incompetence of management and ownership. Sales have dropped of considerably over last 5 years due to ineffective modifications to distributor network as well as overall business plan. Product quality is far less important than simply shipping units out the door. Owner is a dictator that refuses to listen to anyone regarding suggested changes. Company prefers to hire from outside the industry rather than promote from within, which leads to management that doesn't understand the customer base or competition.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There is no point in trying to suggest changes to management. Unless the owner sells the company or goes public, there will never be a change in the culture of this company. Unless there is some sort of revelation in the value in utilizing and developing employees into higher level positions, the company will continue down the path of competitive degradation. Sad, really. The company was once a leader, with well designed products, but once all design was brought in-house, quality has degraded to the point that even the Asian imports are a better choice...
