I worked at Universal Service Administrative Company full-time (more than an year)

Pros

The working environment over at USAC is great. USAC really cares about their employees. Not only does USAC provides basic benefits package, it is the most generous benefits I have ever had during my 18 years career life. They also allow flexible working hours to accommodate individual employee's needs.

Cons

A semi- government work approach. Things move steady, not in a fast pace.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep doing the great job.

    Pros

Great benefits. Flex time offered. Probably good if you are in audit or IT division, both of which have relatively new leadership.

    Cons

Zero leadership, lousy communication (an anonymous intranet portal to the CEO is NOT communication). No vision, no strategy, just a mostly good-old-boys network run by the COO. Leadership and operations divisions are all run by VPs who have been at USAC for at least a decade. Competence definitely not rewarded (at least not in my division). If you care about the mission, this is not the place for you. If you are good at going along to get along (just give me the lousy paycheck and let me leave at 4:15), you'll love it here.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get new leadership. These guys have been there too long. You can't blame everything on the FCC.

Growing Pains have Changed the Culture

I have been working at Universal Service Administrative Company full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

UASC has an excellent benefits package that is second to none, from time off, to health benefits and 401K, which promotes a very healthy work life balance. Contributions are rewarded, and individuals are aknowledged for thinking of ways to do things better. The teams are genenerally very cooperative, and as a whole keep a good eye on the mission to be good stweards of the Universal Service Fund. Managers and Directors as a general rule, care about the employees, their well being and their careers and happiness. The Acting CEO maintains an active communication channel with the rank and file employees.

    Cons

As USAC has gotten bigger, and busier, senior management has gotten more out of touch with what is happening at the employee level. With the improving job market, and economy, the salaries are not as cometitive as they once were which has caused several qualified people to leave. There is also not as much room for career advancement as there once was.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Senior Management needs to get back to its roots a bit more and listen to the employees. The method they use to do the Salary Surveys is also a bit flawed as several people have left to perform the same jobs at other employers for considerably more money. This tied to the lack of growth opportunities has changed the culture. Senior Management should look at ways to retain good employees, and move their careers forward where they can and become more visable.
