I worked at University of Alabama at Birmingham

    Pros

UAB is a large company that seems to attract national attention in its many endeavorers. Everyone in the state of Alabama is familiar with UAB and there is a variety of positions available.

    Cons

While it is good to work for a large company, it also has its down sides. You are just a number when it comes to top management. Though, I never had any issues with this.

I have been working at University of Alabama at Birmingham

    Pros

good benefits health & retirement plan (TIAA/CREF 403(b) program on an matched tax sheltered basis up to 5%)
low living cost compared to others
possibility of internal promotion to a research assistant professor seems higher than others
    friendly & courteous Southerners

    Cons

    location location location
It seems a little sluggish in how things are run here but possibly because it's the South?
Low salary (seems alot of labs here pay below NIH miniumun)-but discontent with postdoc salary is pretty prevalant everywhere

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I have seen much improvement in the career enhancement opportunities for postdoctoral fellows over the years (e.g., seminar series) but I also think there should be more opportunities for meetings/compentative awards and I wish meetings like "Industry Round Table" which introduced different job opportunities were more active.
