Pros

I got to travel across Alaska, and the rest of the US and Canada. There is also a lot of funding sources for research. Loved my advisor and fellowship cohort. Great place to learn and explore.

Cons

Fairbanks can be cold and feel isolated. The water on campus is really gross. Also, housing is expensive.

Advice to Management

Fostering a healthy environment with lots of activity and rewarding salaries helps purple enjoy living here.

    Pros

    Benefits (tuition, health incentives)
    Flexibility (depending on supervisor)
    Stimulating environment
One of the biggest employers, and once you're "in the system" you can move within it

    Cons

Medical benefit costs have doubled for most staff
Starting wages are lower and lower every year
    Parking is expensive and challenging
Pay scales and evaluation procedures are very uneven among employees with similar responsibilities (see the Sun Star Salary Publication from 2011- a total shock!)

    Advice to Management

You'll get good, faithful employees if you advocate for them and remain a competitive employer!

    Pros

Quite environment to work on. Can get a lot of personal projects done efficiently.

    Cons

People are information conservative and likely to get brainwashed.

    Advice to Management

Geophysics and engineering department are good place to work. Don't work with the Residence Life.
