I have been working at University of Alaska

Pros

There are lots of intriguing projects. The possibility existes to be creative when solving problems. There is a good balance here between work and family. The Institute is always involved with cutting-edge research, so people who work here can often feel like inventors.

Cons

University funding is limited, and sometims the staff is considered somewhat expendable. There is little effort to keep payscales in line with market rates, so it is always up to the employee to push for compensation.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

They need to think about staff as a resource to be developed, rather than a tool to be used or discarded. Managing a research institute as a business is a good idea, but there is a limit to how far that analogy can be pushed.

I have been working at University of Alaska

    Pros

Working in a University environment with students. Fairly good benefits except if you are a recent hire. In which case your only retirement option is a 401K. The defined benefit was recently eliminated by the Legislature. The University closes between Christmas and New Years so that is a plus for time off with family, travel, etc...

    Cons

A large bureaucracy. It is a very political place to work. In some fields there is not much room to grow as this is a small university. Dead wood has accumulated in several departments resulting in a slow down of project implementation.
Everything is over studied to the point of stagnation.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Allow honest input from staff with out threat (implied or real) of retribution. More professional training. Staff needs to be updated for codes, regulations, etc...
