I worked at University of Arkansas part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Had a great time working in the laboratory, going to conferences and collaborating and hob hobnobbing with scientists. Also had the ability to replace electives with hands on experience in the lab.

    Cons

Unfortunately some of my time as an undergraduate research assistant was wasted due to my lab being brand new. I ended up helping to create a lab, organize it and doing much more animal husbandry then I had planned due to no full-time staff other than the main scientist/professor.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I would say that this was overall a fabulous opportunity that should be available to all students. I realized early on that I needed REAL lab experience to get my foot in the door with a great career in science. Even with this experience it has been 3 months and no ideal job offers. Cell culture should also be a skill that is added to the MUST have list for biology students. This needed skill is creating a huge obstacle for me in my field of interest. I know many students are unsure of what they want to do in the future....they just go to school and hope to figure it out in the process. This is NOT how I approached higher learning. I wanted to do stem cell research from the first moment I stepped into class the first day. I was recommended to get a degree in Biology for this career goal (maybe not the best route) but will eventually get there through this degree. I would recommend a better list of curriculum for the changing needs of today, especially in this area of interest. My choices were very, very limited.
