I worked at University of Calabria

Pros

Huge university campus in a green area; good libraries; overall good professors; i would recommend is for engineering and science faculties students;

Cons

overcrowded classes; no parking areas; slow career paths; human studies degree courses are just ridiculous; administration people are generally very slow at doing their job

Advice to ManagementAdvice

decrease the number of professors in human studies; increase the parking areas; allow access through the highway; get rid of the concadoro bar and its owners

    I have been working at University of Calabria as a contractor (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    Flexible working hours. You get the chance to work on the things you like, with the tools you like. The cafeteria is cheap and the food is quite good and abundant.

    Cons

    No career opportunities.

    Your assessment is based solely on your research activities although you are often required to perform several other tasks as well (teaching, laboratory management, computers software, hardware and network management, etc).

    The working environment is awful: dirty, unhealthy and very ugly. You will have to clean your own desk, office or laboratory by yourself.

    The bureaucracy is slow, flawed and overly redundant. The procedures to get documents or apply for anything are old and inadequate. If you have teaching activities, you first do them, then after one year you sign the contract and after two years you will get paid... if you are lucky: sometimes they forget about it and when you remind it to them you might even get the blame. And the compensation is ridiculously low, compared to the amount of work and skills required.

    You will have to pay all the expenses you undertake with your own money (travel tickets, accommodation and food to attend conferences, laboratory appliances, keys copies, etc). After you have spent your money you can ask for reimbursement providing the necessary proof, justification and approval by your supervisor. Sometimes it may pass several weeks until you get your money back.

    You don't get any work benefit, bonuses nor severance package. The salary never changes nor grows due to inflation like normal jobs. You are obliged by contract to not have other income from any other job. The salary is taxes free, that means that basically you can't use any tax benefit. You will not be eligible with banks to get a loan or mortgage.

    Your contract can be renewed up to 4 years, after that you can never work as research fellow anymore, in any university nor research center in Italy. The acquired experience is often considered to have no value in the private sector in Italy and it will be easily seen as just a waste of time.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Raise the salary to take in consideration the precarious position. Don't assign duties other then those specified in the contracts. Nurture the growth of your apprentices by frequently sending them to attend conferences and schools related to their research topic.
