Current Employee - Graduate Student Instructor  in  Berkeley, CA
Current Employee - Graduate Student Instructor in Berkeley, CA

Pros

- Opportunity to engage with peers and faculty with similar academic interests.
- Reduced cost of graduate education.
- If considering a career in academics, gives a good understanding of all factors involved.

Cons

- Onerous bureaucracy
- Unless course faculty is experienced, being a student instructor is difficult to manage within the allotted time
- Tendency to "get lost in the system"

Advice to ManagementAdvice

- Make administrative staff more proactive while engaging with faculty and student instructors. Right now getting them to do things feels like pulling teeth.
- Give GSIs better remuneration and benefits since most of them end up working more than the allotted time anyway.
