I have been working at University of California Berkeley

Pros

people are great. the work environment is relaxed. there is nothing really wrong with berkeley as an employer. Well, that depends on what department you work in. As with most universities, there is a huge bureaucracy and sometimes it can be easy to get lost in behind all the red tape. But besides that, people are some of the most easy going you'll ever meet. It is definitely an easy gig if you are in the office most of the day. The campus is most definitely an enjoyable work environment. Feel stressed? take a walk outside in the woods. great.

Cons

The bureaucracy. Sometimes it will take forever to get anything done. You have to wait for the higher ups to give the ok. And with that, sometimes they don't even know who you are which can definitely be a drag sometimes. The operations at berkeley are usually small, you work with a small group of people. So although the campus is quite large, you don't usually interact with many of the people in other departments--people usually do their own things. It can be lonely. I don't know how it would be in the corporate world, but you'd probably be around more people.

Great part-time student job with flexible hours.

I have been working at University of California Berkeley

    Pros

For a student job, working as a Residential Computing Consultant is great. The hours are flexible, and for many of them you have the opportunity to work on homework or other studies while you simply wait on a technical support line or work in a residential computing center. A highly recommended job, make sure to spend time on the application and prepare for the interview, as in some semesters the application process can be very competitive.

    Cons

You can get paid more for doing similar IT work on campus, though the hours are not nearly as flexible.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Since many of the management positions are held by students, they change often, but all of the student managers I have dealt with have been qualified.

I have been working at University of California Berkeley

    Pros

You get good benefits package and a retirement pension once you have vested at least 5-years of service.
Nice campus to walk around during breaks.
Hard to get fired since it's a public job.

    Cons

State budget cuts are really hurting UC Berkeley. There have been no raises or annual increases.
The unions on campus are too powerful on campus and they keep whining.
I know other Programmer Analysts that technically don't know much, yet they are overpaid because they hopped on during the tech boom. You never see salaries go down, so these lucky bastards get to keep their high salaries.
    Hard to get fired.
Too much emphasis on diversity, which actually creates work problems. Don't hire someone based on their skin color. Hire them because they can get the job done!
There are also some lazy staff people around campus. Kind of what you would expect at a public job.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Don't cave into those unions!
