I worked at University of California Berkeley as an intern (less than an year)

Pros

Hard working, intelligent, innovative, cultural diversity and proper mix of work and fun. It gives a perfect platform to the professionals to excel in their respective field of work.

Cons

I guess only downside is the cost of living in California. Berkeley is too expensive and normal people would find it little difficult to bear the expenses. People do have diversions because of the varied cultures present.

Former Employee - Administrative Assistant II in Berkeley, CA
Former Employee - Administrative Assistant II in Berkeley, CA

I worked at University of California Berkeley full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The benefits, vacation/sick leave and work/life balance are fantastic and there are a lot of employee perks. Also, the coworkers were great and the students are smart and easy to work with.

    Cons

Processes are disorganized and there is a lack of communication between departments who need to work together. It's very hard to advance in your career (and pay is low) unless you transfer into a different campus department than the one you work in. Another problem is that when people leave, if a department can't afford to hire someone new, the lower level people have to divide the work of the person that left and accomplish those tasks in addition to their current ones. Supervisors also end up having to supervise people whose tasks they aren't familiar with.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Assign supervisors to supervise employees whose tasks they understand.
