Low pay, low morale, never ending office politics and a senior management group that fails to lead by example.

Pros

Defined Benefit Plan still among the only reasons to work here, although employee contributions will be going up (again) this year.

Cons

Talented people don't stay here. They leave as soon as they can. Senior management is more concerned with office politics than in helping people to succeed. Very little opportunity for merit increases as they are random and usually quite small. This is very much an insular work environment in which "favorites" are advance (often without recruitment) while others are left to languish.

Advice to Management

Trim senior management and redundant staff to free up money and opportunities for others. Stop pretending that this is the way that all public institutions are run and be an example again.

    Pros

    Great benefits
    Competitive compensation
    Stable work environment

    Cons

UCOP is not officially going through a "hiring freeze"...but the President's promise that she will be downsizing her staff by 10% and all new/vacant positions will need to have thorough justification & approval prior to posting sure suggests there is.

Fewer new positions open or filled = a very stagnant environment with very little room for growth

As a young employee starting off my career, its not the most innovative company to work for. Being young is often equated to not having talent and I am finding that my enthusiasm for my job is not shared by my managers.

    Advice to Management

You are losing your young talent because management has no motivation or interest in retention. The current climate with the new President is making your leadership weary and conservative. Their perceived unstable positions cause power vacuums and fosters resentment towards new and ambitious talent.

In short - assure those in positions of power that they aren't going to be laid off so they can stop feeling threatened by new talent and the University can continue to maintain their reputation of excellence

    Pros

People are generally nice. Work is not too demanding.

    Cons

Definitely a state organization. There is so much bureaucracy, nothing gets done. Ironic that there are so many rules and regulations, yet no one follows them. Lots of private kingdoms and little information sharing.

    Advice to Management

Clean house. Too many people doing the same thing at UCOP and each campus. Centralize administrative work but keep education at the campus level.
