I have been working at University of Chicago

Pros

World class university community. As such, you have exciting opportunities to participate in intellectually stimulating community events. There are first rate speakers visiting campus with great regularity. Also, the U of C has an excellent work/life balance. Smart colleagues. Nice people.

Cons

The benefits package is pretty terrible, especially in comparison to peer institutions. The tuition reimbursement is embarrassing, actually. You would think the U of C would have liberal reimbursement policy in order to attract and retain young talent (after all it is an "elite" group working here, right?). HOwever, they have THE WORST tuition remission of top tier universities.

There is some Harvard envy here.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Raise comp if you want to hold on to young talent

I have been working at University of Chicago

    Pros

Flexible work environment with a lot of room for creativity and personal growth if you are a go-getter. Pay and benefits are not bad, especially for a university. Laid back environment in a nice campus.

    Cons

Generally, benefits and salary are not equal to that jobs in corporate environments. Alums/faculty/students are self-important and demanding. Office space situation is sub par. Management is top heavy, lot of directors, not much communication between groups leads to infighting and squabbles over 'turf'. Neighborhood surrounding campus is very dangerous, high crime rate.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

More personal communication would be nice, I really don't have much advice.

I have been working at University of Chicago

    Pros

Name recognition associated with a degree from the University.

    Cons

University is blatantly uninterested in the problems that face graduate students in the Social Sciences. TA's are grossly underpaid, the health insurance package is abysmal, and funding in general is insufficient and insulting.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Take your graduate students seriously.
