Current Employee - Administrative Coordinator in Gainesville, FL

I have been working at University of Florida full-time (more than 8 years)

Pros

benefits, vacation and sick leave accruals
State retirement benefits
UF is the only "real" employer in the city

Cons

Hire-and-fire HR policy. No real human resource management, no career planning. People are often hired into higher positions based on "who they know" or if they are a spouse of a faculty; rarely based on qualifications and credentials.
Male-oriented environment; very few management opportunities for minority women. Physicians and faculty have ultimate administrative decision-making although many of them have no managerial experience (financial or HR).
Top leadership only cares about the faculty; staff is rarely mentioned or appreciated.
Very bureaucratic institution with many incompetent members.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Implement "merit-based" incentive program for staff (faculty already get all the perks and salary raises).
make the annual performance appraisal a useful tool that reflects on salary and promotion

I have been working at University of Florida full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The Physics Department has an outstanding group of researchers and also has collaborations with many other universities and investigation centers. Most of the students in the condense matter area finish grad school with 5+ scientific publications. On top of that you are in North Florida, you have the beach just one hour away, the weather is fantastic and the sports culture of the university is amazing. Also the city is very cheap.

    Cons

Gainsville is a small college town, which means that most people play a sport or go to the gym in the afternoons, party Friday nights and to the pool during the weekend. You do not have the range of activities of a big city. You may get bored.
