I worked at University of Idaho full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Small town, great location, working directly with faculty is often very rewarding.

    Cons

Very poor salaries unless you work for a political office (dean-level or higher). Moving expenses are limited by state board of education to 10% of salary, maximum. 2013 Comprehensive Staff Salary and Compensation Study devalued most technical employees and further reduced initial pay offerings. High turn-over in personnel including deans and presidents.

    Pros

Great co-workers, very much a community feel, and it is always nice to be working with students to advance the university's missions.

    Cons

Convoluted, complicated and confusing organization chart. When things go south, nobody will own up to it, and the blame gets shifted to whoever just left most recently.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to employees. They are the ones on the front line, dealing with the day to day politics. Support and back them. Don't force them into a tough position because you overpromised.
